Dyscalculia Services

Welcome to the fall season

The fall season can be hard for the children in school. This is when the report cards come, and the results of their hard work may disappoint. The troubles with math can come from many issues. Memory, lack of visual spatial insight, processing speed lacking, math or general anxiety, attention issues, teaching that does not suit them, or indeed the math learning disability dyscalculia. It is important to find out exactly what is wrong or you may be working on the wrong issue. See our video series at https://practicalmathhelp.com for solutions for most of these issues and clear demonstrations on how to effectively work with your child at home.

And remember, I’m only an email or phone call away drschreuder@dyscalculiaservices.com or (382) 377 8373.

We have all seen the common mistake of students working on proportions where they add the same number to both parts instead of using multiplication. And indeed, this is one of the hallmarks of students with dyscalculia: they are ‘stuck’ in additive thinking and need a lot of help and practice to make the transition to multiplicative thinking. We can help them to go back to skip counting and easy multiplication connected with visuals from their everyday life. This document is not intended as a worksheet for students to go over individually, but as a guided conversation where you repeatedly check understanding along the way. Please share your experiences, and if you would like to have more of these. Click HERE.
