Professional Track: Removing Roadblocks: Understanding and Supporting Students with LD/ADHD in the Mainstream Classroom. *
Allen Broyles, LDA Board of Directors, Assistant Head of School, The Children’s School, Atlanta, GA
Scott Hamilton, Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Head of School and High School Principal, The Howard School, Atlanta, GA
This workshop will help teachers become more aware of and able to identify those roadblocks. They will also be better equipped to plan lessons that anticipate them and to offer compensatory strategies for students to fully express what they know and are able to do.
Learning struggles present as roadblocks to expressing what the student knows.
With proper planning, teachers can teach in ways that minimize the roadblocks.
There are low-impact, easy to implement strategies that can help students bypass their roadblocks.
Using Universal Design for Learning concepts as a framework helps teachers design lessons with all the potential roadblocks in mind. Anticipating and accounting for all of them makes instruction more accessible to a wider range of student profiles.
Student production does not necessarily equate with the student’s internal state of ability. Lessons with alternate strategies for students to learn new material, and to express what they know will reach more students and result in more learning.
